playforPLACE is an international research project on performing arts in which Sofia Mavragani explores the performative potential of the act of playing and its unique ability to transform the real into the imaginative, the serious into the droll, the actual locality into an unexpected one. Inspired by the Dutch historian Johan Huizinga and his “Homo Ludens” philosophy, Sofia develops a series of in situ performance workshops. Main concern is how we juxtapose ordinary life and special spatial/local temperament with the subversive world of Play. In each location, Sofia Mavragani creates a unique experimental workshop/process together with a local artist based on collective teaching and experiential exchange. The workshop’s co-creators are active in various art disciplines (dance, theatre, music, visual arts etc.) allowing them to approach the notion of Play from different perspectives.
playforPLACE’s aim is to revisit the “place” we are so used to.
Since 2012, playforPLACE has taken place in: CORFU, ISTANBUL, KASTORIA, KALAMATA, TRIKALA,ANTWERP, GRAZ, THESSALONIKI, BUENOS AIRES, NICOSIA, REIKJAVIK, BELGRADE,ZAGREB, WELLINGTON, PORTO, SEVILLA, MARRAKECH
